Gianfranco Frattini was a leading figure of Italian mid-century modern design, celebrated for furniture that masterfully balances refined aesthetics with everyday functionality. Trained as an architect at the Polytechnic University of Milan and mentored by Gio Ponti, Frattini developed a distinctive design language rooted in modernist principles and exceptional craftsmanship. His collaborations with Cassina produced some of the period’s most iconic works, including the award-winning Model 849 lounge chair, the Marema nesting tables, and the celebrated Sesann collection. Particularly drawn to wood, Frattini created sculptural designs such as the Albero bookcase and the Kyoto table, reflecting his deep respect for traditional woodworking techniques and global craft traditions. His work remains timeless, held in the permanent collections of major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper Hewitt.
